0 New Year. New Opportunities.

This press release went out yesterday about my announcement to step down as CEO of Deep South Insurance Group.  I've had the opportunity to lead Deep South for over two decades.  Couldn't ask for a better group of people to work with.  We built Deep South in to one of the largest insurance MGA's of it's type in the United States.  Just as importantly the people at Deep South care about their communities and they show it in their words and actions.  A few years ago I sold Deep South to one of our partners and then stayed on to ensure a successful transition.  As I head into the new year I'll be able to explore many new ventures as well as look to spend more time giving back.  I'm looking forward to it.  Happy New Year's to you and your family.

0 Nanosensors to Fight Cancer

There's a new report out the little, miniature "nanosensors" may be able to detect cancer in typical blood samples taken from patients.  Technology like this -- once proven -- could dramatically lower the costs of cancer screening and detection the story says.  It would also expedite results.  Whether through St. Baldrick's or other charities, Teresa and I are very involved in supporting cancer research.  There has been amazing progress in the past decade with research but we have a long way to go still.  This story and this report shows we are continuing to make progress.

0 Christmas in Space

The Hubble Space Telescope has been beaming back amazing images of the far reaches of space for years now.  Space.com has some of the latest images that look like timely Christmas pictures to some.  Thought this story would be a good one to check out for those of us in the holiday spirit.

3 The History of “St. Baldrick”

I'm in the insurance business.  CEO of Deep South what's know as a "MGA" (managing general agents) in the insurance industry.  I know the indusrty I'm in has so many good hearted and generous people.  I'm betting that not many of you know that the St. Baldrick's Foundation was originally started by 3 reinsurance executives? True.  Back in 2000 these three turned their St. Patrick's Day party into a fundraiser for kids with cancer.  They had hoped to raise $17,000... instead they raised $104,000.  And today St. Baldrick's is funding up to $12 million in cancer research in 2009 alone.  All told they have raised upwards of $70 million since 2000.  They continue to get people of all ages and all walks of life to shave their heads for charity.  Teresa and I are very actively involved in giving to St. Baldrick's efforts to help children fight cancer.  To learn more about how you can help the St. Baldrick mission click here.  Thanks.
